York College is deeply saddened to share the passing of Scott Guise, our longtime Director of Athletic Communications and a beloved member of the Spartan family for 30 years. Scott’s loss is felt deeply across campus and far beyond, as generations of student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and colleagues remember the man who dedicated his life to telling the story of York College athletics with heart, precision, and unwavering loyalty.
Scott began his career at York College in 1995. Over the next three decades, he became the steady voice, historian, and storyteller of Spartan athletics. From the most high-profile championship moments to the smallest acts of individual triumph, Scott ensured that every student-athlete felt valued, recognized, and celebrated. His work was never about spotlighting the institution alone—it was about honoring the people behind the jerseys.
He played an integral role in capturing many of York College’s defining athletic achievements, including the men’s basketball team’s unforgettable 2005 Final Four appearance. But what truly set Scott apart was his attentiveness to the countless unsung moments that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. Many student-athletes recall the pride they felt when Scott would send a message after a great performance or a hard-fought game—even ones he watched remotely while managing other responsibilities. His kindness and encouragement were genuine, consistent, and deeply meaningful.
Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation Paul Saikia reflected on Scott’s lasting imprint, sharing that “Scott’s connection to all things Spartan—especially our student-athletes and staff—extended far beyond his professional role. What affected any of us affected him, and he found that difficult to hide. He didn’t just tell our story; he was a part of it.” To the athletics department, Scott was more than a colleague—he was family.
In recent years, Scott showed tremendous courage as he faced significant medical challenges. Even while undergoing rigorous treatment, he continued to serve the College at an exceptional level. Whether he was behind a camera, wearing a headset in the press box, or quietly working from a laptop during treatment sessions, his dedication never wavered. In recognition of his resilience and service, Scott was named the 2025 recipient of the Middle Atlantic Conference Giant Steps Award, a tribute that reflected the admiration and gratitude of all who knew him.
Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Derek Behrenshausen described Scott as “an inspiration in many ways,” praising his strength, determination, and unwavering commitment to supporting the York College community. “He will be deeply missed, but his impact will continue to provide strength and inspiration to all who knew him.”
Scott’s influence extended well beyond statistics and stories. He was known for his steady presence, his willingness to help, and his sincere compassion for student-athletes and colleagues. Associate Athletic Director Matt Day shared that Scott embodied the York College motto Servire Est Vivere—“To Serve is to Live.” Whether greeting people in the hallways, stopping by offices to check in, supporting teams at events, or encouraging student-athletes in the training room, Scott showed up with care every single day.
Former Women’s Basketball Coach Betsy Witman added that he was “the face of York College Athletics that every student-athlete knew and loved,” remembering his infectious smile, his unmatched courage, and his devotion to celebrating Spartan achievements.
York College’s Director of Communications Julie Loeper reflected on the example Scott set for the entire communications team. “His work ethic was unmatched and inspiring. He approached every challenge head-on, and he did it without seeking attention or credit. We are better because we worked with Scott.”
York College extends its deepest condolences to Scott’s family, his colleagues, the student-athletes he championed, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. His presence will be profoundly missed, and his legacy will continue to shine through every Spartan story he helped tell.
A moment of silence will be observed in Scott’s honor before the men’s and women’s basketball games on Saturday, December 6, as well as before the New Standard Invitational for men’s and women’s wrestling. All events will take place in the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center as the York College community gathers to celebrate the life and lasting impact of Scott Guise, a true Spartan forever.
